Louth Ladies are in junior all Ireland final

LOUTH might have been robbed of Leinster Championship glory earlier this summer but now the Wee County ladies are hoping to bring a well deserved title to this area having booked their place in the All-Ireland Junior Championship final on Saturday.

Dermot Agnew's side saw off the challenge of Derry in Emyvale in Monaghan at the weekend to set up a date with Limerick in Croke Park on September 26.

With 10 changes from the side that lost to the Treaty County at the semi-final stage 12 months ago, the ladies will be hoping for a change of fortune in what will be the biggest day in ladies football in the county since they won back-to-back All-Ireland titles in 1998 and 1999.

Orlaith Kirk, who recently returned to the side after coming out of retirement, is the only survivor from the Junior win of 1998 while present day captain Grace Lynch and ace forward Anne-Marie Murphy are the only others still involved from the 1999 intermediate success.

Nevertheless despite it being a new experience for most of the panel, Ladies County Board chairman Dermot Woods said everyone was keeping their feet on the ground and looking forward to their big day out at GAA Headquarters.

"We were more relieved than delighted at the full-time whistle because we were poor in the second half. The girls were excellent in the first half, when they scored 3-6, but they only got four points after that.

"Obviously they were delighted to get to the final but we felt we made it a bit harder than it should have been.

"Having said that there were 10 from last year's team missing, including Gillian McDonnell who did her cruciates in, so it was quite an achievement. It's heads down now for the final.

"We're holding a meeting now in Knockbridge on Thursday to come up with fundraising ideas ahead of the final and we'd ask everyone to support the girls.

"They've been brilliant all year and considering we lost so many from last year it's a great tribute to the management team that they've brought them this far," said Dermot.
