THE 2012 Rás na hÉireann took place on February 12 at Oldbridge, Drogheda, with Coca Cola as title sponsor.

The Rás na hÉireann was of particular importance this year in the athletics calendar. Dunleer Athletic Club celebrated the life of Larry McGuill, who sadly passed away during the summer of 2011.

Rás 2012 was called the Larry McGuill Rás na hÉireann in Larry’s honour and the race was once linked with the Armagh International Road Race.

In the International Mens 6k, local hero Martin Quinn finished 11th and was 4th Irish man home and first Dunleer man home to win the Louis Duffin Memorial Cup.

The winner, Landon Peacock (USA) received the Larry McGuill Cup from Bernadette Mc Guill, wife of the late Larry McGuill, former Director of Rás na hEireann.

With the USA finishing 2nd, 4th, 5th , 6th and 7th, they were easy winners of the International team prize. Ireland were 2nd in the International team category. Armagh took the club team award, with Dunleer AC in 2nd.

In the ladies event, Lizzie Adams from Team Puma England was the winner ahead of Sarah Porter from the USA, with Aleksandra Jawor of Poland in 3rd. First home for Ireland was Ciara Durkan in 5th, with local girl Fiona Roche in 8th place. Poland won the team event, with Ireland in second.
