After a long hard cold winter, and the first signs of spring have begun to appear in the last week or so and with this in mind we now find ourselves at the start of another Tidy Town season. It is 29 years since Tallanstown first entered the competition in a serious way. During those long years the village has shown fantastic improvements, culminating in the winning of the National award in 2010. Sometimes we take these improvements for granted and it is deeply regretted that we do not have photographs of those early years in the 1980’s to remind everyone how different the village appeared at that time.
We will be starting our work sessions shortly hopefully, when the weather gets a bit warmer. We would welcome with open arms any new volunteers who might be interested in helping keep the village clean and tidy. Any help however small will be gratefully accepted and appreciated. The Work sessions are good craic and nice social occasions as well as being vital for the upkeep of the village.
North East Cycle Challenge 2013
The cycling community of Carrickmacross has joined forces with Carrickmacross Lions Club to organize this year’s challenge which will take place Sunday 5th May 2013. The event will cater for all cyclists, with the 100km Drumlin route extending through parts of Cavan and mid Monaghan and the 30km Oriel route will have the picturesque village of Tallanstown as its destination.
The Challenge will appeal to both established cyclists throughout the North East and also to people who are thinking of taking up cycling for the first time. Cycling is growing in popularity and the Oriel Route will be very manageable for people who start a simple eight week training plan, which will be published in the Northern Standard and on the Carrickmacross Lion’s website at www.carrickmacrosslionsclub.com
The Bring Bank in Tallanstown is a national award winning facility and is the envy of many communities throughout the country. However, in recent months it is very noticeable that some people using the facility are leaving bags of rubbish around the area. This is absolutely unacceptable. If you notice the bins getting too full please inform the Fas office upstairs in the Old School and we will contact the collection agency. Cans may be disposed of at the facility
National Spring Clean 2013
This year’s National Spring Clean will take place on Saturday April 27th from 10am to 12pm. We hope to focus on a few areas around the village where some dumping of household rubbish is taking place. We have also been in contact with Louth village Tidy Towns Committee and both groups will clean the roadside between Tallanstown and Louth. This area is very heavily littered at the moment. All volunteers, and we would welcome help from anybody, should gather at the Old School at 10am. Gloves, high vis vests and litter bags will be supplied an also a nice cuppa when all is finished.
Baile Talun U11 team played their first game of the 2013 season inTallanstown on Friday the 12th April when they played St Nicholas’s from Drogheda.
On a beautiful sunny evening spectators witnessed a game of end to end football. St Nicholas got off to a better start getting a couple of early goals and had a good spell early on. Baile Talun came roaring back at them with some fine scores and by half time it was evident that both sides had an array of talented footballers. The home team were led by the class of Ged Burton and trickery of Liam Mohan while many other players with huge potential like Darren Hillard, Trevor Farrell, Odhran Kelly and Ciara Owens constantly ran at the opposition to put them on the back foot.
A very close and competitive game was enjoyed by all involved and in the end a draw was a fair result.
