The entry for the Larry Dunne-sponsored Corn Cuchullain, the feature event at Dundalk & Dowdallshill coursing club’s annual two-day meeting, commencing at The Commons, Dromiskin, on St Stephen’s Day, is one of the classiest ever.
Several runners who’ve been already successful this season are in the line-up, and they are not only chasing a first prize of €3,000, but also points that could earn them a place in the Champion Stakes at Clonmel.
There was a huge demand for places in the trial stakes. As secretary, Gerry Callan, pointed out at the draw, as many as 63 owners were looking for an entry in the Derby and marginally fewer than that in the Oaks.
In whittling those numbers down to 32, they had tried to be as fair as they possibly could, but many would be disappointed, he said.
Competition will be keenest in the Workers’ Stake, an event confined to greyhounds owned by club members who help with the huge volume of work that ‘s required to prepare for and run the meeting.
Coursing commences each day at 11.30. John O’Connell is the Judge, while Newry’s Mark Gorman will be in the role of Slipper.
