137 athletes, some well experienced but a lot of newbies, aligned the old Newry Road for the first Setanta Sportsmans Duathlon Race on Sunday last.

This race was well represented locally with some new faces to duathlons. Donnach Callan, ex-Louth Hurler traded in his hurley for a new bike to place well in the field just five minutes after the hour mark. If Donnach sticks to a training plan he will see fast improvements over the race series.

Local Dundalk tennis champion from a number of years ago, Ronan Halpin is a welcome addition to the sport. Another local fresh face is Niall O’Callaghan, bringing along a few pals for the challenge.

There were also welcome returns to Jarlath Farmer and Lisa Connolly. Jarlath is a recent sub three hour marathon runner and a strong cyclist. This is his first duathlon, so a 56 minute finish proves he will do a sub 55 minute this season. Lisa is also a seasoned marathon runner and its great to see her back wearing the club colours.

The next race is on March 11 and is open to all levels.
