Division 1 League

Geraldines 2-13

Cooley Kickhams 2-6

Haggardstown/Blackrock side Geraldines finished the league season at the top of the table for the first time in the club's history following the weekend's final round of fixtures.

It was Cooley who began the game the brightest and had a strong breeze on their backs. It took a great save by Gers keeper Kearney after six minutes to deny Cooley a goal.

Kearney pulled off another top save moments later, but the rebound resulted in a Cooley goal. After just eight minutes the Peninsula side led 1-1 to no score.

A wayward kick out and defensive mistakes resulted in Cooley's second goal and the Peninsula lead 2-1 to 0-00 with ten minutes gone.

Michael Rogers eventually opened scoring for Gers from the left boot, but Cooley got back up the field and got another point. After 15 minutes Geraldines trail by seven points.

With the home side moving out of sight as the first half reached the end, Paul Clarke got Gers back into the game with a goal with his first touch of the ball to leave it 2-5 to 1-3 and a minute later Rogers converts free to reduce deficit to four points at teh break.

Shane O’Hanlon missed a point for Gers with the first chance of second half, but then found the back of the net with an opportune goal moments later. It was a one point game.

Cooley put their first chance of the second half wide before O’Hanlon leveled the score at 2-5 each and then put Gers a point ahead with another free converted.

The away side started to see the way forward and, led by O'Hanlon pushed into a three point lead.

Gers lead by four points with five minutes to go. Some tremendous Gers defending denied Cooley a way back and super sub Cathal O’Brien came off the bench to score the last point of the game.
