Ardee Celtic were beaten by a 120th minute goal in the first round of the Leinster Cup when they made the long trip to face Mountmellick.

The first half was a very even contest with both teams threatening every time they went forward but a poor playing surface spoiled most of the play from each side.

Ardee fell behind in stoppage time of the first-half when they were punished by losing possession in their own half and, after a through ball, Mountmellick’s striker finished when he went one on one with Alex Reilly in the away goals.

Undeterred by this, the visitors started the second-half brilliantly and got a deserved equaliser. Some great play by Dean Gaynor set William Woods free and he made no mistake with his finish to level matters.

The Deesiders completely dominated the second-half and would have been out of sight but for some excellent goalkeeping that had Woods, Lorcan Myles and Dean Gaynor all seeing magnificent efforts saved.

With the scores level at the end of the 90 minutes, it would take an additional 30 to try and separate the teams.

Ardee started extra time the brighter team and took the lead after great play between Woods and John Bingham saw the ball fall for Myles and his goalbound effort was tapped home by Shaun O’Connor.

Ardee Celtic had a fantastic chance to put the game to bed with an effort from the lively Woods going inches wide and in stoppage time of the first half, Dave Rogers’ side were punished with Mountmellick tapping home after a free-kick hit the woodwork.

The mid-Louth side were then very harshly punished in the final minute of extra time when a mistake from a corner allowed the hosts a two yard tap in to for a cruel winner.

ARDEE CELTIC: Alex Reilly, Mikey Nulty, Barry Kelly, Paul Carrie, Robbie Reynolds (Conor Lynch), Shaun O’Connor, Dean Gaynor, Jonathan Deegan, John Bingham, Lorcan Myles, William Woods.
