A BIG crowd in sunny Fatima were treated to an action packed 90 minutes between two of the giants of Summer League football as Shamrocks and Muirhevnamor played out a 2-2 draw.

It was first blood to the visitors as Thomas McShane latched on to a long clearance from the back to power a shot over the advancing Alan Sheehy to give Muirhevnamor a 10th minute lead.

Owen Armstrong came close to equalising minuites late with a thumping header before Muirhevnamor went 2-0 ahead when Sean Conlon’s cross-cum-shot beat the home keeper.

A spectacular effort from Martin Murphy deserved a goal for Shamrocks but, thankfully for the visitors, the ball went just past the post. At the other end, Gary Clarke’s audacious overhead kick almost extended the Blues’ lead.

Shamrocks pushed for a foothold back in the game and Armstrong whizzed a free-kick just over the crossbar before Michael Cooney produced the save of the match to deny Aidan Sheehy’s free-kick from reducing Muirhevnamor’s lead.

Shamrocks continued their all out attacking policy in the second-half and the pressure paid off in the 71st minute when Jimmy Cooney was brought down in the box and he dusted himself down to fire home from the penalty spot.

And with time running out a Billy Smith shot was deflected into the net to level the ganme at two goals apiece.

Neither side could conjure up a winner in the remaining minutes, the draw maintaining both sides’ unbeaten start to the 2013 Fyffes Dundalk Summer League season.

Michael Cooney, the Muirhevnamor goalkeeper, and Owen Armstrong, the Hoops midfielder were both outstanding on the night. Both players feature in this week’s Team of the Week.
