Woodview Celtic inched closer to the Integral Fitness MDL Premier Division title thanks to a vital 4-2 win against deposed champions Rock Celtic in a thriller at Sandy Lane on Friday night.

The Seasiders were first out of the blocks and on four minutes they opened the scoring thanks to a composed finish from Ger McSorley after he seized upon a wayward pass from Alan McCartney.

Things got even better for the home side when they were awarded a penalty kick that left both sets of players puzzled but, not for the first time this season, Woodview goalkeeper Padraig Gorham made an excellent stop from Kevin McArdle’s spot-kick.

Despite this setback, David Hoey’s side did make it 2-0 when David Ward got a touch to deflect a McSorley drive past Gorham.

Raymond Trimble’s side are renowned for their never say die attitude and it came to the fore with half time fast approaching as Chris Caulfield found the net from a Paul Warnock delivery.

Five minutes into the second half and the sides were level when Ray McCann swung a deep corner kick to the back post and Paudie Hearty thumped a powerful header to the net.

Woodview were in the ascendency now and it came as no surprise when they went 3-2 ahead. McCann delivered an inswinger to the head of Mickey O’Kane and he cushioned his header down for Hearty to score from close range.

Woodview secured the win late on when clever play between Smith and McCann allowed the latter to curl the ball past John Rogers.
