Two goals in the last five minutes by Toles Agunlinade helped home side Muirhevnamor defeat Bellurgan in the U11 Premier Division on a bitterly cold Tuesday night.
The hosts have had a decent start to the season with four wins and two draws and, despite two defeats in eight games, their title challenge is still well and truly on track.
Bellurgan will be disappointed with the result on the night. For long periods of the game they defended bravely and certainly had enough chances and probably feel a draw on the night would have been the fairest result.
The peninsula side did the create the first chance of the game in the 7th minute with a shot from Andrew Cunningham that flew over the Muirhevnamor crossbar.
Bellurgan keeper Kevin Long then had to be sharp to make two good saves from David Osobe and Dylan McGuill.
The visitors finished on top in the first-half with Peter McCusker flashing a shot inches wide of the Muirhevnamor goals after latching on to a clever pass from Phil Sheelan.
The impressive Gabriel Ayous for Muirhevnamor had a great chance to open the scoring in the first minute of the second half when he found himself one on one with Kevin Long but the Bellurgan keeper agains stood tall and brought off a terrific save.
Good defensive play from both teams led to very few goal scoring opportunities but the home team’s luck changed in the last five minutes when a long ball from Ayous bounced over the Bellurgan ‘keepers head and Toles Agunlinade timed his run to perfection to tap in the loose ball to make it 1-0.
Bellurgan were on the attack two minutes later but lost possession and a quick counter attack ended with Agunlinade scoring his second goal.
Jamie Lee was unlucky not to add a third in the last minute with a cracking effort that shaved the top of Bellurgan crossbar.
