Bellurgan advanced to the 2nd round of the Eamon Mulvenna Cup after this comfortable 2-0 win over Shamrocks in Fatima on Sunday afternoon.

It was sweet revenge for Bellurgan as they had lost 2-1 in a league game to Shamrocks at the same venue only two weeks ago which turned out to be a costly defeat in their title race with Ardee Celtic who won the league by three points.

Bellurgan were 0-1 ahead with just four minutes played when Shane McCaughey fired to the roof of the Shamrocks net after he skipped unchallenged past three defenders.

Bellurgan’s second goal was in the 26th minute when Dylan O’Hanlon’s low cross was forced home by Mark McCabe.

Chances were very scarce for Shamrocks. Dean Brown’s free-kick was headed over by Anto Reilly in the 8th minute and the same two players were involved again a minute before the half-time whistle when Shamrocks were awarded an indirect free kick on the 18-yard line, this time Brown rolled the ball to Reilly but he blasted over the Bellurgan crossbar.

Bellurgan were down to ten players midway through the second half when Shane McCaughey was red carded for an off the ball incident but it didn’t have any effect on the Bellurgan teams composure as they showed great commitment and determination to get a result.
