Muirhevnamor secured their place in the last 16 of the MDL Tully Bookmakers Cup when they beat Boyne Valley 1-0 at home under the floodlights on the all weather pitch on Friday evening.
Sean Dixon’s side started in a positive mood and they opened the scoring on 20 minutes. The visiting goalkeeper was penalised for inadvertently handling a back pass and the always alert Philip Duffy played a quick free kick to set up Brendan Hughes to blast the ball to the net from the 12-yards.
Boyne worked hard to retrieve the situation but Jimmy Cooney and Brian Begley proved to be solid defenders for the home side as they limited the visitors to very few clear sights of goal.
The second half was evenly balanced with both sides restricted to shots from distance.
The MDL Division One leaders began to dominate in the final 15 minutes and they were unlucky on several occasions not to put a better reflection on the scoreboard with Gary Clarke striking an upright on two separate occasions and Sean Colon and Shane O’Brien also been denied by excellent saves.
Nevertheless the one goal was enough to ensure that Dundalk still has a representative in the MDL’s blue riband competition.
Muirhevnamor: David Cooney, Paul Mallon, Brian Begley, Jimmy Cooney, Thomas Conway (Stefan McKevitt), Philip Duffy (Padraig Smith), Shane O’Brien, Sean Conlon, Gary Clarke, Brendan Hughes, Ryan Dillon (Damien Bailey).
