Rock Celtic recorded their fifth win of the season in this middle of the table U13 clash with Bay United under the Bellew Park floodlights on Thursday night.
The Blackrock side set the tone from the first whistle and got off to a blistering start with Conor McVerry and Eoin Byrne threatening early on and they took the lead inside five minutes when the Bay defence failed to clear Eoin Byrne’s corner and Conor Traynor fired home from inside the penalty area.
The sides were level four minutes later when the pacy Gerard Vamal got on the end of a defence splitting pass from Victor Adegobi to slot pass Noel McQuillan.
Rock went back in front in the 19th minute from a Conor Casey free-kick and they went 1-3 ahead a minute later with the goal of the game when Declan Curtin’s left footed shot flew into the top right corner giving Bay goalkeeper Luke O’Hanlon no chance. Back came Bay again and they were unlucky not to reduce the deficit before the break after a terrific run and pass by Gerard Vamal to set up Travis Crowley but Declan Curtin’s timely block cleared the danger.
The second-half was only on 20 seconds when Conor McVerry slotted home a fourth goal for Rock but Bay refused to surrender and kept battling with Travis Crowley, Daniel Chong and Ronnick Achums all going close.
Gerard Vamal did score for Bay in the 55th minute when he shook off the challenge of two defenders to fire past McQuillan to make it 2-4 but it was the Rock who finished stronger and they were denied a fifth goal when Luke O’Hanlon produced a brilliant double save from Donal Leavy in the closing minutes.
