A James O’Brien equaliser in the 55th minute earned Blayney Academy a share of the points with St Dominic’s in Bellew Park on Saturday morning.
The result was possibly a fair reflection on the game as both sides enjoyed periods of dominance throughout. While Blayney had to wait until those closing minutes to salvage a point it was no more than they deserved in this exciting game.
The visitors had a good chance to go in front in the 9th minute through Joshua Wilson while at the other end, Aaron Crawford was unlucky to see his effort well saved by Conor Clerkin.
The deadlock was broken in the 19th minute when Conor Mulligan intercepted a pass out of the St Dominic’s defence and he looked up and spotted the goalkeeper off his line to hit a terrific shot to the far corner of the net.
Mulligan almost doubled the advantage for Blayney in the first minute of the second-half when he raced on to a Liam McDonald pass but this time his effort was too high to trouble St Dominics ‘keeper Jacob Rygielski.
The sides were level a minute later at 1-1 when a perfect cross by Calum Quigley was headed home by Patrick Murtagh and it got even better for St Dominic’s shortly after when Mark McShane slotted past Clerkin to put the Friary outfit 2-1 ahead.
Both teams’ passing and movement off the ball saw chances created at both ends and it was no real surprise when Blayney equalised in the 25th minute of the second-half after Rygielski failed to deal with a cross from Declan Courtney and James O’Brien was in the right place to hammer home the loose ball. Conor Clerkin produced two excellent saves to deny Brian Brady a winning goal in the closing minutes and a superb block by St Dominic’s defender Mark McShane denied Conor Mulligan from snatching a winner for Blayney.
