Bellurgan went top of the U14 First Division on Thursday night after they extended their unbeaten run to six games with this comprehensive win over Setanta in Bellew Park.
The win put Bellurgan one point ahead of their nearest rivals Glaslough Villa with both teams having played six games each.
They settled quickly into the game and were two goals ahead after 12 minutes with strikes from Alex O’Hagan and Brendan O’Hagan.
Setanta’s first chance fell to Dion Clohessy in the 20th minute with a stinging drive that Bellurgan ‘keeper Michael Keenan did well to tip over the crossbar but Setanta did score a few minutes later when the ever dangerous Shane O’Brien got on the end of Ross McNally’s pass to fire past Keenan to make it 1-2.
Bellurgan were on fire in the second half, netting three after the break without reply. Ciaran Garlan scored following a goalmouth scramble after two minutes and five minutes later Conor Keenan stroked home a fourth goal for Bellurgan from the penalty spot.
To their credit, the home side’s response was positive, Ross McNally fired inches wide of the Bellurgan post after he latched on to Dion Clohessy’s long pass from deep in the Setanta half but Bellurgan had the final word when they scored their fifth goal after Fintan Sheelan was given far too much room and he netted from just inside the penalty area.
