ROCK Celtic opened their Nivea For Men MDL Premier Division season with a statement of intent as the Seasiders cruised to a 4-0 victory over Bellurgan United at Tom Flynn Park on Sunday morning.

The Blackrock side went close to scoring when Kevin McArdle rattled the butt of an upright on five minutes and shortly afterwards David Ward was off target from a good position after clever play from Jamie McCaul.

Bellurgan’s best opportunity came when they were denied by their former goalkeeper John Rogers after Daniel Kerr had created room in the penalty area.

Rock eventually made the breakthrough midway through the half. New signing Gerry McSorley crossed from the right wing, McCaul nodded down and Paddy Quinn hammered a rocket past Robert Arthur.

Shane Reddish’s side doubled their advantage ten minutes into the second half when Ward’s perfectly weighted pass sent McSorley clear and the former Dundalk U19 striker calmly picked his spot to make it 2-0.

The visitors were well in control at this stage but they were given a major fright when Shane Finnegan saw an effort go narrowly wide after an error by Rogers in the Rock goal.

On 65 minutes Arthur did brilliantly to deny Ward a second goal but not long afterwards Quinn added his second of the game to make it 3-0 despite the best efforts of Alexis Zambouglou and Ross Dullaghan who battled manfully to stem the tide.

The scoring was completed with ten minutes left to play. Arthur denied McSorley and Paddy Reilly in turn with two excellent reflex saves before Derek Delany followed up to blast the loose ball to the net with an unstoppable drive from deep inside the penalty area.
