Dundalk U19s made it two wins out of two in the Aitricity Northen Division as they battled to a 2-1 victory over Fanad United on Saturday.
Martin Connolly’s side had to dig deep to come away with all three points and they did so thanks to Paul Finnegan’s second-half winner.
In a game played in monsoon like conditions, it was Dundalk who started brightly and they bossed the early exchanges.
The young Lilywhites were without the services of midfielder George Poynton who was with the Irish U17 team in Slovkia but his creativity wasn’t missed and Finnegan should have put them ahead from a Craig Pentony corner.
Fanad eventually crept into the game and they took the lead just after the quarter-hour when their centre-forward turned Manny Kaguako to fire past Ryan Davis.
Dundalk responded well and they equalised on the half hour mark when a corner from Pentony caused havoc in the Fanad box and one of the home side’s defenders headed the ball past his own goalkeeper.
Connolly’s side opened the second-half on the front foot and Ciaran O’Connor and Craig Doherty both had chances that they failed to take.
However the winner duly arrived midway through the half when Doherty whipped in a fantastic free from the left and this time Finnegan made no mistake with his header.
Fanad threw everything at the Dundalk back four in search of an equaliser but led by Kaguako and Finnegan, Dundalk held on for the win.
The young Lilywhites are on the road again this weekend as they play Derry City in Buncrana on Saturday.
