A CONTENDER for one of the games of the season was played midweek in Glenmuir Park between Glenmuir United and Rock Celtic in an end to end encounter in the U13 Premier Division.

Despite the blustery conditions, both sides conjured up an exciting game, dripping with quality, full of chances and the only surprise is that neither side added to their total.

Referee, Frank Brennan, could have left his cards on the kitchen table as there wasn’t a bad tackle in sight where both sides showed full commitment.

Mark Kilgallen threaded a terrific ball into the path of Peter McStravick in the 4th minute but the Glenmuir striker fired straight into the arms of the grateful Flynn Kierans but McStravick made amends four minutes later after another terrific pass from Kilgallen when he blasted high into the roof of the net to put Glenmuir 1-0 ahead.

A mistake in the Glenmuir defence should have led to an equaliser on 13 minutes but Mark Hanna’s shot was too tame to trouble Glenmuir ‘keeper Mark Byrne.

Rock Celtic’s most influential player Aidan Curtain was always in the thick of the action and his stinging left footed shot on 15 minutes bounced off the Glenmuir ‘keeper and then off the post and Curtain’s follow up corner kick found the head of Daniel Corcoran but his powerful header was brilliantly saved by Mark Byrne.

Glenmuir had a great chance to increase their lead in the 29th minute. Peter McStravick’s cut-back from the end line found Mark Kilgallen in space but Mark Hanna’s timely block prevented Kilgallen’s shot from finding the target.

It was more of the same after the break. Rock Celtic had to get a result in order to stay in contention for league honours and they came out in the second half with great intent.

Oisin Murtagh and Kerri Ogherfun had chances saved by Mark Byrne in the opening few minutes but at the other end the Rock Celtic ‘keeper Flynn Kierans had to be alert to prevent Mark Kilgallen’s free kick in the 6th minute from finding the net.

Rock Celtic responded with a superb run and cross from Oisin Murtagh that was headed narrowly wide by Kerri Ogherfun then Liam O’Callaghan forced the Glenmuir goalkeeper into a fine block after another accurate Murtagh cross, the equalising goal came from the resulting corner kick when Kerri Ogherfun tucked the ball home following a goal mouth scramble.

The tackling, blocking, heading and general play from both rearguards was first class but Rock Celtic did have the edge in the second half and they were denied the winner with three minutes remaining when Oisin Murtagh’ s left footed strike bounced off the top of the Glenmuir crossbar after Ogherfun set up him up.
