Bellurgan United had a morning to forget at Tom Flynn Park on Sunday, going down to a 2-1 defeat at home to Trim Celtic and finishing the game with nine men.
The home side failed to get out of first gear as the visitors, who took a very physical approach throughout the game, went two goal up at the break with Bellurgan only a shadow of the team that defeated Newfoundwell in Drogheda seven days earlier, only goalkeeper Robert Arthur performing anywhere bar his best.
Alex Bothwell had strong words for his team at half-time and it had the desired impact as they upped their game considerably but could not find a way past a Trim defence who dished out some heavy challenges.
Bellurgan eventually found a way back into the game with 10 minutes to go when Shane Finnegan slotted home from the penalty spot after a Keith Finnegan goalbound shot was handled on the line. To the amazement of the home side, no card was shown to the offending Trim player.
Frustration crept into Bothwell’s players and Stephen Malone was dismissed after he reacted to another reckless challenge before Declan Sharkey was also shown a red card for dissent, putting the cap on a miserable day at the office for the peninsula side.
Bellurgan United: Robert Arthur, Aoghan McGuinness, Damien Connor, Nigel Stanley, Stephen Malone, Keith Finnegan, Ciaran Rogan (Declan Sharkey), Jason Brennan, Darren Marks (Owen Traynor), Shane Finnegan, Darryn Gaynor. Unused sub: Kevin Lawless.
