Ardee Celtic’s 100% start to the Division One season continued in style on Sunday as they blitzed their neighbours Square United with four goals in the opening 35 minutes of the derby at Townspark.
Dave Rogers’ side took the lead after five minutes when Dean Gaynor continued his recent run of good form by scoring with a 20-yard volley.
Gaynor added a second after 10 minutes to leave Square reeling. He continued his run after passing the ball wide to Shaun O’Connor and slotted home the return ball from close range.
The game look dot have been put beyond the reach of Jim McLaughlin’s men after just 20 minutes as Ardee grabbed a third when Alan Connor headed home a loose ball in the visitors’ penalty area.
Square came into the game looking for their first win of the season and they grabbed a lifeline in the 25th minute when Alan Kirk beat Alex Reilly with a fine strike.
The Deesiders, though, restored their three goal advantage in the 35th minute when O’Connor was taken down by the Square goalkeeper and Connor stepped to slot home the penalty.
Ardee Celtic continued where they left off in the first-half and substitute William Woods scored made it 5-2 when he ran at the Square defence and finished with with a low drive.
With the points safely in the bag, the home side took their foot off the pedal and Brian Corcoran pulled one back for Square when he dispossessed the Ardee goalkeeper.
Rogers’ side had the final say, however, with Woods adding his second, and their sixth, late on with a tap in. The win keeps Ardee in second place, three points behind the pacesetters Abbey Celtic with a game in hand.
