Ruaidhri Higgins insists that Dundalk will be going into Thursday’s Europa League second qualifying round first leg against Hajduk Split full of belief that they can make progress to the next stage.
The Croatians are hot favourites to advance but Higgins, who was part of Derry City teams that recorded some famous results in Europe over the years, said Dundalk have nothing to fear.
“Hajduk are a massive club but we all remember the Shelbourne game with them 10 years ago and hopefully we can get the same result.
“It’s not bad going in there as underdogs because it takes the pressure of people but the group of players we have don’t fear anybody. We have players who are suited to European football so we won’t be afraid of them.
“When you play in Europe it is all about your concentration levels. You have to be tuned in for 90 plus minutes. Hajduk will be very strong and they have lots of talent but I don’t think they’ll be delighted to come and play us. I fully believe that we can cause an upset.”
Higgins played his part in helping Dundalk progress to the second round, putting in a man of the match display in last Thursday night’s 3-1 win over Jeunesse Esch at Oriel Park. And it was the Limavady man’s free-kick which led to Brian Gartland putting Dundalk ahead .
“That early goal settled us,” said Higgins. “We have enough players in the team that can attack a ball so if you can put it in the right areas there is every chance we’ll score.”
