For the second year in a row Dundalk Schoolboys League’s U12 representative team emerged outright winners of the Euro Tab Inter-League Cup.
Four leagues; Wicklow, Kildare, South Dublin and Dundalk compete annually in this mini one day tournament on the Mayday Bank holiday.
After winning last year’s Kildare based event, this was Dundalk’s turn to stage the tournament and a very successful day was completed with the local league beating the South Dublin League 4-0 in the final game to regain the cup.
The first game between the South Dublin League and Wicklow was played in Clancy Park on Monday morning and ended 1-1, South Dublin won after a penalty shootout.
Dundalk played Kildare in Bellew Park at the same time and a goal in each half from Ope Stephen and Tom Jackson gave Dundalk a comfortable victory.
Kildare and Wicklow then played out a thrilling 3-3 encounter, and it was Kildare who won the penalty shootout to earn 3rd place in the tournament.
The final with Dundalk and the South Dublin League was played in Bellew Park before a huge crowd in the afternoon.
A Jonathan Commons free kick in the 19th minute of the first half found the unmarked Jack Duffy who fired home to put Dundalk 1-0 ahead.
Commons almost doubled the advantage for Dundalk in the 23rd minute when his Ardee Celtic clubmate Tom Jackson brilliantly laid the ball into his path but his shot flew inches over the crossbar.
In between, Dundalk ‘keeper David Odumosu had to be alert with two terrific saves as the Dublin side pressed for an equaliser.
Dundalk went 2-0 ahead two minutes into the second half when Cain Bromley got in behind the Dublin defence and slotted under the advancing keeper and just four minutes later it was 3-0 when the busy Bromley beat his marker and rolled the ball across to Tom Jackson to fire home.
The South Dublin League pressed for the remainder of the game but centre backs Conor Soraghan and Mark Traynor were very composed and gave an outstanding display in the home defence.
The icing was put on the cake in the final minute with a fourth goal for the Dundalk League when the impressive Jackson jinked his way past two defenders and set up Kian Newell who slotted home to complete a well earned win and complete a very successful tournament for the Dundalk Schoolboys League.
