Shields heartbreak on worst day of career
Dundalk’s Chris Shields hit out at referee Anthony Buttimer for bringing about the worst day of his career and killing his side’s cup dreams.

Dundalk’s Chris Shields hit out at referee Anthony Buttimer for bringing about the worst day of his career and killing his side’s cup dreams.

“It is not down to football today the ref has killed the game,” he fumed. “I’m not one to come out and criticise officials because I know it is a tough job but he has killed it. Darren’s first tackle of the game should maybe be a yellow as it is soaking wet and he tries to win the ball.

“The second one, I thought I got the ball and if not then its a penalty but never a red card as there is two met covering so to me the ref has had five minutes of madness that killed it.”

The former Bray man praised the spirit of his teammates and also revealed that the man in charge had some interesting words about Meenan’s dismissal.

“The nine we had battled to the end and are a credit to themselves but this is so disheartening and is the worst day I’ve had in football,” he admitted.

“I was a bit surprised he got the game and when he is saying to us after Darren’s red card ‘I wouldn’t even pay him his wages next week’ that’s totally unprofessional and shows what mood he was in!”
