A hat-trick by Alex Hannefy was the highlight of this game as Rock Celtic cruised to a comfortable victory over Muirhevnamor on Tuesday evening.
Celtic led 0-2 at the interval with goals from Hannefy and Ross Kelly but Muirhevnamor reduced the deficit five minutes into the second half when the unmarked Keylen Mulligan headed home Conor Sage’s inswinging corner.
This was the home team’s best period in the game, Mulligan tried his luck again two minutes later with a free kick from over 40 yards out that just sailed over the top of the crossbar and Sage went close to equalising for Muirhevnamor before half time when the midfielder got on the end of a left wing cross from Matthew Egan but his shot was well saved by Rock Celtic ‘keeper Matthew Fee.
The Blackrock side then introduced new signing Kizito Ekwueme and the game soon swung back in their favour. The ex-New Generation striker’s first touch in the game helped set up Rock’s third goal.
He picked up possession on the right before crossing to the back post for Ciaran Fee to lay it off to Hannefy who finished from close range for a well worked goal.
Egan then went close for Muirhevnamor when he turned his maker in the penalty area but Fee produced another good save. Hannefy completed his hat-trick in the 51st minute at the second attempt, Muirhevnamor defender Ryan Shields cleared his first shot off the line but Hannefy pounced on the rebound and fired home to make it 1-4. Kyle Woods looked certain to score for Muirhevnamor on the hour mark but his close range effort that had ‘keeper Fee beaten was somehow cleared off the line by Ross Reilly. Ekwueme then took showed his class at the other end when he set up Dylan Sharkey to score the fifth goal and then fired home the sixth goal himself after a superb through ball from Liam O’Callaghan.
