Muirhevnamor FC reached their seventh McConville Cup Final in a row in controversial fashion against Shamrocks FC with a 4-3 victory.

Referee Gary Donnelly and his assistant Thomas Little failed to see a Muirhevnamor defender punch the ball clear with the score standing 4-3 to Muirhevnamor, in the dying seaconds od a rip roaring game.

Before the final whistle Dermot Greer and Conor Mackin of Shamrocks were dismissed after a short melee, joining goalkeeper Jason McConville of Muirhevnamor on the red card list.

The high tempo clash saw Paudie hearty draw first blood, tapping in Conlon’s cross to give Muirhevnamor a seventh minute lead. Within minutes Conor Mackin had Shamrocks back on terms, stabbing home Jimmy Cooney’s corner at the near post.

On 20 minutes McConville took down Jimmy Cooney just outside the box and being the last man took the long walk.

Five minutes later Cooney should have put the Hoops ahead, but blaxed over. Micky O’Kane made it 2-1 to the cup holders with a simple tap in on the half hour mark.

Deco Moran brought a great save from stand in keeper Paul Mallon shortly before he finger tipped Cooney’s free kick onto the crossbar.

Another Cooney free kick was brilliantly headed home by Aidan Sheehy to send the team’s in level at the break.

Billy Smith wasted a great chance twelve minutes into the second half, just before Padraig Gorham punched the ball onto the head of Adrian Rafferty and could only watch as the ball flew past him into the net to put Muirhevnamor 3-2 ahead.

On the 75th minute mark Conor Mackin latched onto a long clearance and drilled the ball just inside the post to level the scores at three goals apiece.

A thumping header from Sean Dixon with a minute and a half to go put the ten men in front yet again.

Barry O’Hare had a pile driver blocked on the line before the controversial punched clearance off the line. As frustration set in the referee had to sort out a ‘gathering’ of players in the Shamrocks half, issuing yellow cards and sending off two Shamrocks players as the game ended.
