Muirhevnamor FC made it eight McConville Cup wins in a row with this composed 4-0 victory over first time finalists Rampart Celtic in Oriel Park.

The boys in pink have now won the Cup 10 times in the 37-year history of the trophy.

The game began with Rampart ‘keeper David Lynch reacting brilliantly to a stunning strike from Darren Tuite but Muirhevnamor then found their rhythm and some quick passing allowed Gary Clarke to fire a low shot just inside the near post to give his side a 13 minute lead.

Declan Sharkey, easily Rampart’s best player, skinned the full-back before unleasing a superb effort from the edge of the box which just missed the top right hand of Jason McConville’s goal.

The second goal came from Ray McCann as he stabbed the ball over the line with 35 minutes played while Rampart’s Stefan Zlokapa found the site netting as the holders held a 2-0 half time lead.

Phil Duffy sent one just over the Rampart crossbar and then thumped one off the base of the upright at the start of the second half but McCann finished off the contest 15 mnutes in when his superbly struck daisy cutter found the bottom corner of the goals.

Lynch had to be very alert to deny McCann his hat-trick and minutes later saved a point blank effort from Gary Clarke to keep the score down.

A McCann free kick again rattled the upright while Saheed Ogunfuwora brought a wonderful save out of McConville with 15 minutes left from a powerful free kick himself.

The last action of the game fell to Sean Conlon of Muirhevnamor who found the net with a delightfully placed ball to the top right hand corner and bring Rampart’s blue riband journey to an end.

The Brian McConville Cup was presented to captain Jason McConville, nephew of the late Brian, by his father Colm McConville.

Fastfix sponsored the final as they have done for so many years and the matchballs were sponsored by the Louth branch of the referee’s society and Dundalk FC again provided the home of football in Dundalk for the occasion.
