Quay Celtic earned the point they needed to clinch the U13 Premier Division title after this closely fought 1-1 draw with Rock Celtic in Clancy Park.
The home side got off to the best possible start with a goal after only three minutes. A delightful pass from Ronan Sands put Terence Kelly in behind the Rock Celtic defence and the Quay Celtic striker fired past the stranded Rock Celtic goalkeeper Paul O’Grady.
Kian McEvoy nearly doubled the home advantage minutes later with a fierce drive that shaved the outside of the Rock Celtic post. Quay dominated the opening exchanges and should have extended their lead in the 14th minute when a Sands free-kick found the head of the unmarked Thomas Daly but his effort went narrowly wide of the post.
There was plenty of attractive approach play from both sides, Quay Celtic in particular, but few clear cut chances from open play.
James Teelan caused havoc in the Rock Celtic defence every time he got on the ball and threatened on several occasions and Dylan McKeown was denied by a terrific save from the away ‘keeper. Rock Celtic dug deep and gained confidence in the latter stages of the game and picked up the tempo and equalised in the 57th minute when a Conor Soraghan shot was blocked on the edge of the Quay penalty area and Josh Connolly pounced to slot past Joseph Mee.
Rock Celtic went agonisingly close to a second goal a minute later when Kieran Johnston went racing clear of the last defender but Joseph Mee was alert to the danger to win the race to the ball.
It was then a nervous two minutes for the home side but they deservedly held on to win the point needed to win the league title.
