Dundalk Schoolboys League’s U15 representative team had a slow start to their campaign in the 30th Northern Ireland Milk Cup in Coleraine last week.
The local side started with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Hapoel Haifa from Israel in their opening group match and a 2-0 defeat to Co Antrim in their second encounter on Tuesday.
The Schoolboys League squad showed a vast improvement as the week progressed with a terrific 2-2 draw against American side Strikers FC on Wednesday before they recorded a fine 3-1 victory over Cruz Azul from Mexico later the same day.
That win qualified them for an NIMC plate final showdown with neighbours Co Down on Thursday but sadly Dundalk suffered a 4-1 defeat in the final.
The Dundalk players were presented with runners-up medals after the game by the Mayor of Ballymoney. Dylan O’Hanlon was Dundalk’s leading scorer in the tournament with four goals and the Dundalk Player of the Milk Cup was Shamrocks player Anton Reilly.
The coaching staff of Rod McGourty, Cronan McCabe, Brian McGuinness and physio Tommy Traynor would like to extend their thanks to all the players who participated at the Milk Cup. They were a credit to their clubs and their families and we wish them all the best for the coming season.
