Rock Celtic 3rds 0-3 Quay Celtic 3
Quay Celtic Reserves made the journey to Sandy Lane on Saturday hoping to overcome Rock Celtic 3rds and book their spot in the quarter final of the MDL Reserve Cup against Duleek.
Playing against a young Rock team whose energy levels were high, Barry Kieran’s men had to put up an impressive performance to come away with a win.
The first chance of the day fell to Johnny Lynch in the first 10 minutes after some good link up play with Conor McKeever but Lynch could only divert his shot wide.
Lynch played a major part in Quay’s opening goal shortly after, combining with Daniel Kerr for the opening goal. Kerr did well to beat his man and his cross fell perfectly for McKeever to finish with the head.
Rock tried to hit back and they put the visitors under some strong pressure. The Seasiders did create chances but Liam McDonagh was alert in the Quay goals.
Both teams came out of the blocks attacking in the second half but it was the Point Road side who struck the decisive second goal of the game.
A quick counter attack saw Quay player-manager Kieran pick the ball up in the middle of the park and his pass set Daniel Kerr through one on one with the Rock ‘keeper where he made no mistake.
Quay Celtic killed the game off as a contest five minutes later when Kieran floated in a free-kick and Derek Rogers volleyed home to finish the game in style.
To Rock’s credit they never stopped and with five minutes to go they hit the crossbar after a great passage of play down the right but it was the Clancy Park side who took their place in the last eight.
