The reopening of the schools after the summer holidays presented Sensei Mary Marcus 1st Dan with the perfect opportunity to hold a women’s only ‘taster event’ which enabled any female, regardless of age or ability, to come along and ask her any questions or to even try out a karate move or two.
“With Karate and Martial Arts in general being quite male dominated and very few female instructors known locally or even nationally, it was an opportunity I could not miss”, explained Mary.
“I was overwhelmed with interest in this event and I even got the opportunity to be interviewed by Dundalk FM and LMFM, which was a fabulous chance to get the word out to everyone both young and old.
“I have found that a number of women would either have their hands full with kids and need some time, or even be a little nervous at the prospect of doing any physical activity. They may also have a fear of maybe aggravating an existing condition, or any other recurring ailment.
“I would stress to anyone who would come along to my Women’s Only Karate Classes, that it’s not about me standing over them and demanding that they do X, Y or Z, but that they go at their own pace. We have found that this process produces the best results which has been confirmed by those who already attend my classes.
“This is an opportunity for women regardless of age or ability to do something for them.”
Currently Mary is not only training and helping teach/coach students within Ireland Wadokai Karate-Do Remnei (IWKR) but she is also teaching karate in the Redeemer Family Resource Centre and the Blackrock Community Centre.
As well as her Women Only Classes, she has already introduced a new Junior Class for any child from the age of 4-years of age right up to 16-year of age in the Redeemer.
Mary has also been teaching pupils of the Bay Estate School for over two years now and is thrilled with the huge success and support given throughout the year by the school’s principal Martina Rafferty and all its teachers and staff.
Every member of her classes enters with trepidation as to what a class would entail but as the class progresses each member begins to relax and to enjoy the thrill of learning not only one of the most dynamic martial arts, but learns discipline, respect, self-defence and so much more.
