Darren O’Donogh started his day with a bronze in the U12 weapons division. He then moved up a section to the 16-years and under and won double gold in forms and weapons.

Darren then put on his sparring gear, entered the advanced section and battled through to the finals in light-contact sparring and with a split decision from the judges, took home a silver in this section wrapping up his day with four podium finishes.

Enda Kelly entered his first competition in over five-years and went out to show the judges what they have missed, starting his day with a bronze in the junior section for weapons and completing his day with a gold in the senior weapons division, giving him a double podium finish for his return to the competitive arena.

Tomás Flanagan entered both the point fighting and light contact sparring divisions. After securing a gold in his point fighting, Tomás was unfortunately put out of the advanced light contact in the quarter final round against a very experienced opponent.

Tania Treacy, the youngest and newest member of the competition team, used this as her debut into the competitive arena.

Sparring in the novice section, she hid her nerves and moved fast. An amazing semi-final where Tania won with confidence, saw her through to the final and after a very close fight Tania took the silver medal with only one point separating her from the winner.

Monique Martin entered the junior weapons division against opposition from down the country and secured her first gold of the day. She then went on to compete in the senior division and once again wowed the judges to secure her second gold.

Monique is heading off in September to compete for Ireland in the prestigious WAKO Junior World Championships which takes place in Slovakia. As this is not government funded, any businesses that would like to support her through sponsorship are encouraged to get in touch.

Senior National Championships

Early May saw the 2nd round of the Senior National Championships take place.

MAS-F had one competitor, instructor Fidelma Martin, entering the Veteran Light-Contact sparring division.

As it was the second round of qualifiers it was straight into the semi-finals for Fidelma.

After a highly fuelled and adrenalin pumped two rounds against her Dublin opponent, Fidelma won by unanimous decision from all three judges.

The final, against an opponent from Cork had to be stopped and under the demand of the medics, was not allowed to proceed, leaving Fidelma to settle for a silver medal and a ranking of no 2 in Ireland.

Fidelma is the junior sparring instructor in MAS-F and was happy to come home with a finalist ranking to encourage the members to continue trying, no matter what age!
