A 32 year old man who was charged with burglary, trespass and criminal damage in Omeath, was last week sentenced to 100 hours community service at Dundalk district court - instead of two month sentence.

The court heard last month that a homeowner had locked two suspected burglars in a metal freight container after he heard voices inside, and rang the Gardai.

The man - who is from the North, came upon the pair when he came to his house at Cornamucklagh on October 23 last, to fix a door that had been damaged during a previous break-in.

Conor McLoughlin with an address at Cornamucklagh, Omeath was charged with causing criminal damage after two padlocks and a steel bar, used to secure the container, had been broken.

The case was adjourned until last week so his suitability for community service could be assessed.
