THE Monastery NS Ardee took part in the recent Intercultural and Anti-racism Week for schools.

The partner organisation is Show Racism the Red Card and boys from 3rd and 4th class attended a workshop featuring Jeff the Ref.

The week was co-ordinated by 5th class and class teacher Ms Maxwell with the assistance of Master Keane. Activities included: a picture colouring competition for infants; a Show Racism the Red Card Poster Competition for all classes; a Shoot the Hoop Basketball Competition with the countries of the world competing; and a Multicultural Exhibition featuring stands on the countries of the world.

The highlight event of the week was a Multicultural Exhibition in the gym, with pupils manning different stands for different countries. Each stand had samples of information about the country, samples of its food and music, national flag and so on.

Every class in the school visited the exhibition, and it provided the boys with an understanding of the cultural diversity in Ireland today.

The flags of many countries were displayed high above the gym floor. The parents of the newcomer children provided an amazing variety of food, including Serbian sausage and beans, Latvian dumplings, Nigerian dried shrimp, Russian crisps, Malaysian savouries, Moldovan desert cake, Ukrainian food and more.

All of the classes thoroughly enjoyed sampling the many different foods from around the world. Parents were invited to attend and local press photographers also attended.

Monastery National School would like to acknowledge the support and funding of Louth Leader Partnership which is an independent company established and supported by the Irish Government and the European Union.
