A mother of four pulled out at a junction - causing a collision with a motorbike, as the low-lying sun affected her vision Dundalk district court was told last week.

Mariam Ariyo (48) with an address at Clann Chulainn Park, Farndreg, Dundalk was initially prosecuted for dangerous driving but her Defence barrister successfully argued that a charge of careless driving was more appropriate.

Garda Insp. Martin Beggy told the court last Thursday that the defendant was exiting a junction on the Carrick Road, when she pulled out in front of a motorcyclist and pillion passenger, who were approaching from her right. He added that the sun may have had some bearing on the accused vision.

He said there was a glare from the sun and the motorcycle hit the back of his client’s car. He added that both men while injured, were able to walk away.

The barrister argued that the category of careless driving was more appropriate in the case, and while his client made a bad judgement call - her driving wasn’t dangerous. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €250 fine.
