INSPECTOR Fintan McTiernan of Carrickmacross Garda Station has released crime prevention advice in the lead up to Christmas, outlining key ways in which the public can protect themselves from criminals.

Recently, the Gardai in Cavan and Monaghan have had some good successes in arresting members of criminal gangs from outside the counties who have engaged in burglaries right across both counties, targeting houses that are vacant during the day time.

The Gardai in Cavan/Monaghan Division have a crime prevention strategy in place in both counties with the main aims of preventing crime occurring in both counties and targeting and arresting the criminals involved in any crime that does occur.

During winter, there is always the likelihood of an increase in criminal activity in your locality. Therefore the Gardai are asking that all members of the community play a role in preventing crime in their localities.

The following advice is given with a view to preventing crimes.

Business people: Never leave property in any place where it is not secure or in a place where you or your employees cannot keep a close eye on it.

If you have CCTV installed, make sure its working and recording the areas you need it to.

Make sure that the lenses of all cameras are wiped clean at least once a day.

If the premises has outside window and door shutters always use them during close of business.

If, for any reason, your alarm system is faulty make sure you have it repaired that day. Even if you only discover it at close of business, have it repaired immediately.

One employee should never be left on their own in a shop unless it’s small and they are in full control of all of the premises.

Safes in use should be bolted firmly to a concrete wall or concrete floor.

Continue to be on the alert for forged currency, be it Euro or Sterling. Any forged note tendered should be held onto as it may contain forensic data that can assist the Gardai establishing the identity of the person or persons involved in this type of crime.

Oil theft: Your fuel supplies should be checked regularly, including your oil heating storage tanks to ensure that they are fully secure and cannot be interfered with.

Next week: advice for protecting cars, the elderly and vacant properties.
