O’GORMAN’S Supervalu in Carrickmacross are backing local producers as part of the Farmers to Market initative, which will see the supermarket stock a new premium brand of free-range chickens this Christmas.

The move is estimated to be worth €1.3 million in retail sales.

Farmers to Market comes from a partnership between Manor Farm Chicken processors (Carton Brothers) and twelve free-range chicken farmers from counties Cavan and Monaghan.

“Here at O’Gorman’s we have always backed local producers. If we can source it locally, we do,” says Eugene O’Gorman. “This new range of premium chickens will see the very best in local poultry on the shelves, but not at a premium prices.

“I’ve been out and met the farmers, and I can tell you that the free range chickens are reared to the highest standards. We have an ethos here of supporting local producers, and we have always had an emphasis on this. There’s no point just paying lip service to this idea, it’s about living and breathing it.”

Recently, Eugene shot to fame as one of the faces of a national Supervalu ad campaign, appearing on TV screens across the country.

“To be honest I was petrified when doing the screen tests, but everyone has been very supportive and people seem to think that I’m just like I am here in Supervalu. It’s also a great endorsement of the store here as one of the top stores in the country. That couldn’t have been achieved without 70 to 80 of the best local talent that are working here. We have people working here for 30 years and without the great team here we wouldn’t be were we are.

“It’s local people who shop here and invest in us, so we have always invested in the local community, be it through employing local staff or stocking fantastic local produce.”
