Traders put Ardee first
THE Ardee Business and Traders Association has put forward proposals for for the restructuring of pay-parking in Ardee.
A spokesperson for the traders said they are only interested in what is best for the town and the people who work there.
The traders want a two-hour free parking period each day from Monday to Friday to Friday. This will give shoppers the chance to shop locally and allow them ample time to stop and shop and eliminate the stress factor attached currently to shopping in Ardee.
They are also looking for free parking all day on Saturdays.
They say that Saturday’s business has been depleted over the last few months and is no longer the main shopping day.
“We need to encourage people to shop local on every occasion,” a spokesperson for the traders said.
“This is especially so on Saturdays as families are out and about at the weekends.
“We are competing with other neighbouring towns, some of whom have no pay-parking in place, so we feel at a total disadvantage and would hope that the proposals we are putting forward will be carried out for a period of at least 12 months and reviewed after.”
The traders feel that this would give everyone the opportunity to see what is best for the town of Ardee.
“We need every opportunity we can to encourage people to shop in Ardee if we are to stand a chance of surviving this economic tsunami,” the traders spokesperson said.
Cllr Finnan McCoy raised the points made by the traders at a meeting of Ardee Town Council.
It was agreed to study the proposals and other submissions.
The councillors, like the traders, are worried about the effects of the economic downturn on business in the town.
It has been proposed by Mr Joe McGuinness of Louth County Council that a new initiative should be set up to see how trade can be improved.
Events such as weekend food fairs could be established.
