Scrap the Household Charge
ARDEE Town Council is calling on all local authorities in the country to back them in their call for the abolition of the Household Charge.
The council will write to the Government asking that the new law be scrapped because it only applies to some people in the community and therefore is unfair.
Cllr Jim Tenanty put a motion before the town council asking that members call on the Government to rethink the 100 euro charge as it is a burden on those who can least afford to pay it.
“This has been just plucked out of the air,” Cllr Tenanty said. “It just doesn’t make sense”.
Cllr Paudie McKenny said the whole thing had not been thought out.
He said Category 3 estates, where the developer has ceased trading are not eligible to pay the tax.
Category 4 where the developer has gone into receivership, is also exempt.
Cllr Fintan Malone said that if someone had built a granny flat into their property, they had to pay double the fee.
Cllr Mary Kavanagh said it was in no way equitable as it didn’t matter what size your house, everyone had to pay the same amount.
But Cllr Finnan McCoy, Fine Gael, defended the charge.
He blamed Fianna Fail for doing away with household rates back in 1977.
he maintained that the charge had been there for years until it was scrapped in an election stunt.
But most councillors agreed it is unfair and illogical and when Cllr Leonard put forward a motion calling on the Government to scrap it Cllr Tenanty withdrew his motion in support.
