Council meetings on the air
THE cost of broadcasting meetings of Dundalk Town Council on local radio is too high for the council to consider it an option.
This was the view expressed by council officials when a motion was put before the council to have the meetings put on air.
Town Clerk Mr Frank Pentony said it could cost 6,000 euro in the case of one station and the council does not have the money.
He said Fingal County Council had live broadcasts but these cost in the region of 25,000 euro.
He pointed out that there would be a need for editorial control and the council did not have the staff to provide that luxury especially with the major cutbacks in staffing levels.
Cllr O’Boyle had put forward a motion asking that the council’s officers take part in talks with LMFM and Dundalk FM to see if council meeetings can be recorded for broadcasting.
He wanted the meetings broadcast to “enhance democratic awareness.
Cllr O’Boyle said the idea was worth looking into.
He wanted the Policy Committee to look into it.
However, Cllr Conor Keelan was concerned about the level of interest people might have in recorded versions of meetings.
