Just before the end of term, forty-five first year students from St. Mary’s Community School Ardee had a wonderful experience when they paid a visit to Aras an Uachtarain to meet our first citizen President Michael D Higgins

In November of last year, the students wrote to the newly elected President to congragulate him on attaining the highest office in the land.

They wrote to him in Irish.

This had been undertaken in Irish class under the supervision of Ms Connolly, who encouraged them to write in Irish. A number of weeks later an invitation from the President arrived. As a result, the students had a private meeting with him where he thanked them for their lovely letters. The President gets one hundred requests a day, and out of all these requests, he chose Ardee Community School’s first year students. They obviously made a big impression on him. He spoke to them in Irish and gave them a tour of the house. They were very impressed. Organic apple juice and biscuits were served. Moreover, the students were delighted when they got to meet the President’s pet dog, Shadow. They played with him for about thirty minutes. Both teachers and students enjoyed the experience and will treasure fond memories of the visit.
