Zero tolerance for rag week revellers
COLLEGE Manor residents association have said that there will be “zero tolerance” of anti-social behaviour during this weeks student “Rag Week”.
John Temple, chairperson of the resident association, told The Dundalk Democrat that the Gardaí will be making full use of the newly installed CCTV system in College Manor.
“The CCTV is in place for residents and student’s safety,” said John, “Each morning the Gardaí will review the CCTV footage. No exceptions will be made. Nothing will be tolerated.”
Temple, who has been a proactive voice in the area for a number of years campaigning for the installation of CCTV, said that he understands students need to socialise, but that there is a line they should not cross.
He said: “I have no problem with students socialising but when it leads to the destruction of other people’s property then you know it has gone too far.
“Families live in College Manor and adjacent estates, a lot of them have very young children that need to get up for school the next morning and people have work to go to.
“Every year students that are not in the DkIT, but who come from outside Dundalk, comes to the year and they leave a trail of destruction behind them. This will not be tolerated.”
This is the first estate in the town that has CCTV installed, making it one of the safest estates in Dundalk.
Temple acknowledged that last year’s “Rag Week” was conducted successfully and that the majority of students show respect for others living in the estates close to the college.
Meanwhile, a meeting was held between the DkIT Student Union, College Manor Residents Association and the Community Policing Unit regarding this year’s event.
“We have canvassed the local estates asking students to consider their community during this year’s Rag Week,” said Benny Traynor, Vice President of the DkIT Student Union.
“We held meetings with the residents association and the community policing unit and we all want to work together.
“We also went into classes and spoke to them about the importance of respecting the local community.
“We want student’s to have fun, but within the boundary of the law,” Traynor added.
