Young woman in grip of addiction

A young Dundalk woman who was stated to be in the “grip of an addiction for an appreciable period” admitted a series of thefts, as well as handling stolen property.

Bernadette Joyce (27) of 37, Doolargy Avenue was remanded back in custody by consent for two weeks to March 27th when she appeared before the local district court on Wednesday. She is to be assessed on whether she can do community service.

The court heard that the offences occurred between July and November last. She carried out thefts at three local stores, Elverys at the Inner Relief Road, Hickey’s Pharmacy, Dundalk Shopping Centre and Prize Pets, River Lane and handling offences and theft at Clanbrassil Street.

Property at Elverys and Hickey was recovered, which amounted to w678 in the latter instance, but property taken from Prize Pets was not recovered. Some of the property was recovered at Clanbrassil Street.

Solicitor James McGuill said the defendant had difficulty with the court since she was a teenager. She was keen to be there for her daughter. She was prepared to do community service if available to her. There were other road traffic matters against the defendant.
