Young harp player wows the Fleadh Cheol judges
A YOUNG girl from Dundalk who has only played the harp for two and a half years wowed judges at the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheol in Cavan.
The judges were so impressed with Fionnuala Donlon (12) from Greenwood Drive, Red Barn's Road, she won first prize in the under 12 harp competition.
The former Bay Estate pupil, who is now a first year student at St Vincent's Secondary School, also came second in the Accompaniment U12 playing the harp.
"She has been taking lessons with Nadia Markey from just outside Ballybay. She is delighted with the win but she is also a very laid back lady and is taking it in her stride," said Fionnuala's father, Padraig Donlon.
Fionnuala is a member of Comhaltas Ceoltir ireann Craobh Dn Dealgan Branch and takes Irish dancing lessons at the Mona N Rodaigh School of Dancing.
"Fionnuala did a couple of performances in the Oriel Cultural Centre in the Old Gaol in Dundalk earlier this summer," said Padraig.
Fionnuala's older sister, Siobhn, plays the violin with the Cross Border Orchestra, which is due to go to China to perform at an expo next October.
