Were council houses properly surveyed? - Sharkey

editorial image

Councillor Tomás Sharkey has called upon Council staff to confirm that houses bought by the council were properly surveyed before they were purchased.

“My Council colleague Jim Loughran was furnished with a list of all homes bought by Louth County Council since 2009. There are approximately 200 homes bought by the council over that period – for allocation as social or affordable homes.

“Recently I called to one of these homes and I was shocked. That home I visited was cold, draughty, poorly insulated and difficult to heat.

“As a result of this, I am calling on the County Manager to outline what engineers surveys are required before the public’s money is handed over for houses.

“Public money has been spent acquiring homes from private vendors. It is crucial that Value for Money is achieved. It is essential that the homes we buy with public money are fit for purpose and pass reasonable engineering checks.”

In response to the request by Councillor Sharkey, Paddy Donnelly of Louth County Council told the paper that: “Any dwelling purchased by Louth Local Authorities is purchased where there is an identified need and is subject to normal conveyancing practises and compliance”
