Warning issued after recent oil thefts

Following recent oil theft incidents throughout the country and in Louth, the OFTEC, which represents the domestic oil heating industry, has issued a warning and advice to householders to be vigilant.

OFTEC’s advice follows a warning from the Gardai, who are also highlighting the issue after the recent incidents, which have targeted residential oil tanks, schools, businesses and playgroups in urban and quiet residential areas.

Both Kilkerley NS and Mullabouy Church in North Louth had heating oil from their tanks stolen recently.

The school and church had just recently had their tanks filled with oil, estimated to be worth around €1,000 and were left with little or no fuel in each case.

David Blevings, OFTEC Ireland Manager said,

“During the winter, fuel tanks can be seen as easy targets for thieves as many people are keeping their tanks stocked up.

“Houses, farms, business premises, transport depots and holiday homes can all be affected – especially within rural areas or on quiet residential streets.

“Usually it’s only when people run out of oil and their heating stops working that theft becomes apparent.

“However, by taking a few simple precautions such as making a regular note of your oil levels will help to ensure that you are not the victim of oil theft.”
