Try Pilates to achieve that perfect body shape

Practiced for decades by dancers, Pilates has become popular in recent years with celebrity followers such as Jennifer Aniston, Katie Holmes and Madonna all speaking of its effectiveness.

Pilates focuses on the core muscles of the body ( abdominals, pelvic floor muscles and lower back muscles ). It actually creates length in the body.

Benefits include better muscle tone, more efficient breathing, better co-ordination, improved balance and stronger back muscles.

It is also used by athletes who believe it assists in injury prevention.

Pilates was developed by a German physical trainer called Joseph Pilates.

Top ballet dancers have used the techniques for years to improve their posture and muscle tone.

Pilates can be practiced by people of all ages and all fitness levels, from the complete beginner to more advanced levels.

There are different types of classes, with the mat based program being the most typical here in Ireland. However fit balls, medicine balls and balance equipment can also be used during the class to challenge the body’s core muscles.
