Trial 75 cent rate - Meenan
A DUNDALK town councillor is to the call on the council to trial a 75 cent per hour parking rate in the town.
Cllr Kevin Meenan is to forward the motion at the meeting of the DTC today (Tuesday).
Over the Christmas period the town had a low rate of 70 cent per hour, but that has now gone back to the €1.40 per hour charge.
Speaking with the Democrat Cllr Meenan told the paper: “When the pay parking came in it was as a traffic control measure, but now that economics have taken a downward swing it’s there as a revenue driver.
“I’d like to see a three to four months trial period at 75 cent per hour. That way it would be €1.50 per two hour stay.
“There is a big appetite in town for a lower rate. Many other goods and services have dropped in price, not to mention people’s wages.
“There was an argument put forward that maybe the decrease over the Christmas period to 70 cent per hour didn’t necessarily bring more custom back into the town centre, but with the new Market Square it could be the right time to lower the rate.
“I’m not saying this is going to be a solve all solution to the town’s problems, but if enough similiar measures are brought in they could have a positive effect on business in the town.”
Cllr Meenan has also put forward a motion to send a deputation to Dunnes Stores to work out a solution to what is fast becoming an eyesore in the town.
Cllr Meenan believes the old Dunnes Stores building, once a landmark building in the town, is quickly becoming delapidated, and is having a negative effect on the image of one of Dundalk’s busiest thoroughfares.
“The building is starting to become derelict looking and is having a negative impact on town. If we could meet with Dunnes Stores we could possibly come to a solution.
“It could possibly be used as community hub or centre, a could be used by various groups within the town. As it stands it is detracting from the town.”
