THREE men from Dublin will appear again before the Special Criminal Court this Thursday 14 March charged in connection with the fatal shooting of dissident republican Peter Butterly from Cortown Togher Dunleer.

Peter Butterly was shot dead in the car park the Huntsman Inn at Gormanston in county Meath last week.

Edward McGrath (31) Land Dale Lawns, Springfield, Tallagh, and Dean Evans (22) Grange Park Rise, Raheny, were charged with having a pistol and ammunition. They were also charged with membership of the IRA. David Cullen (28) Brackenwood Avenue, Balbriggan, was charged with the unlawfull possession of a pistol.

They were arrested under the Offences Against the State Act and appeared before the Special Criminal Court on Saturday night last.

Gardai believe the leader of the new IRA splinter group ordered the killing.

Peter Butterly (35) was a former leader of the Real IRA in the Louth region, and was believed to have been sidelined because he was suspected of having kept funds for himself.

Gardai believe the Armagh-based leader chose a Dublin northside unit to carry out the shooting.

Peter Butterly was lured to his death after receiving a phone call to meet some of his former associates.

He was in his Renault Megane when two men drove into the car park.

One of the men fired two shots into Peter Butterly’s car.

The victim struggled to get out and two more shots were fired.

He fell to the ground as the two men sped off, throwing a handgun out of their car.

Their gataway car was rammed by a garda patrol car and the two were arrested.

Two other men were detained when garda officers stopped an Opel car, and the fifth man was held after he arrived at the scene on foot.

Three of those detained appeared on Saturday at the Special Criminal Court.
