Text alert system must be brought in

Sinn Féin Councillor, Jim Loughran, is calling for a Garda co-ordinated text alert system to be put in place through existing community alert systems.

Councillor Loughran who is vice chairperson of the Dundalk Joint Policing Committee says”Evidence shows in areas where such systems have been piloted there has been a significant drop in bulgaries and public order offences. Text alerts can be used by the Gardaí to alert communities of suspicous activity in their area and also by the community to alert the Gardaí of suspicous activity.

“Text alerts already exist on an ad hoc basis in some areas, particularly border areas. A more co ordinated system would be a significant tool in cutting crime.”
