Supergran, Nancy Burke, saves the day for DkIT students

It is said that grandmother's will do anything for their grandchildren, but one granny recently went the distance.

A group of DkIT students were left short for a lead character in a student film. So, with nowhere else to go, one of the producers managed to persuade her grandmother to play the part.

The film, 'Sophie' was made by Eimear Burke, Emma Dunlop, Chris Mooney, Ciara Scott and Aisling Callanan.

The students made the film as their final project for Film and Video Production in DkIT.

Originally, they started planning for the script in September, but after getting the script ready and securing the actors for most of the parts, the students realised there was one role left to fill, the role of an elderly woman.

But Eimear's grandmother, Nancy Burke, saved the day as made her on screen debut for the project.

Eimear said: "We came up with the idea in September and February, me and Emma, the director started production work.

"It was hard making it, especially picking the actors. We had dozens of girls line up for the part of the young girl, but eventually went with Emma McArdle.

"Asking my granny to act in it was the toughest one though and then directing her around the scenes, but she was brilliant for us and really saved the day."

The film was shot in Ravensdale and is about a young girl in her fantasy land. She is then followed by a ghostly woman who keeps looking over at her, but in fact, the ghostly woman is the is young girl, who now has alzheimers and is looking back at her life.

Now after three years of hard work, Eimear and the group are hoping the film is enough to earn a top mark in their final grades.

"Hopefully it will. We are very proud of it and if it is good enough, then maybe we will enter it into some festivals, so fingers crossed."
